​A Tour of Abbeys and Castles in the

North-East of England

 

THE FOLLOWING ITINERARY IS FROM A PAST SOCIETY TRIP, AND IS PRESENTED FOR INTEREST ONLY, TO ILLUSTRATE THE TYPE OF TRIP THAT THE SOCIETY ORGANISES WITHIN THE UNITED KINGDOM

 

Monday 1st – Friday 5th June 2026

 

Based in Berwick-upon-Tweed for four nights, we will visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, as well as several castles and abbeys in Northumberland and the Scottish borders. Travel will be by coach, collecting and returning us to our hotel in Berwick each day. This will be the Dracula Society’s first trip to the far North-East of England – six castles, three abbeys, a church and a priory, and a stay in historic Berwick, England’s most north-eastern town!

 

Day 1: Monday 1st June

Travel to Berwick-upon-Tweed for the start of our trip. We have a 4-night stay at the Premier Inn.

 

Day 2: Tuesday 2nd June (50 miles)

Departing at 9am we start our tour by crossing the causeway to the iconic Holy Island (14 miles), visiting the ruins of the 11th Century Lindisfarne Priory and 16th Century Lindisfarne Castle. After a lunch break we continue to Bamburgh (17 miles), where we will visit the dramatic Bamburgh Castle and St. Aiden’s Church dating from the 12th Century. We then return to Berwick (19 miles) for an evening at leisure.

Day 3: Wednesday 3rd June (88 miles)

Departing Berwick, we head west to explore the Gothic ruined abbeys of the Tweed Valley across the Scottish border. Our first stop will be at the remains of Norham Castle (7 miles). Crossing the Scottish border we continue to Dryburgh Abbey (25 miles). After a lunch break in Melrose (8 miles) we will visit Melrose Abbey before continuing to Jedburgh Abbey (14 miles) for our final stop before returning to Berwick (34 miles).

Day 4: Thursday 4th June (81 miles)

After breakfast, we head south, our first stop being the ruins of 14th Century Dunstanburgh Castle (32 miles). After our visit, we drive south to Warkworth Castle (11.5 miles), and then continue to Alnwick (8 miles) for a lunch break and free time in the town. In the afternoon we visit Alnwick Castle before returning to Berwick (29 miles).

Day 5: Friday 5th June

Free day to explore Berwick at your leisure before returning home.
