50th Anniversary Trip

 

THE FOLLOWING ITINERARY IS FROM A PAST SOCIETY TRIP, AND IS PRESENTED FOR INTEREST ONLY, TO ILLUSTRATE THE TYPE OF TRIP THAT THE SOCIETY ORGANISES OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM

Romania 2023

 

Friday 26th May - Sunday 4th June 2023

 

Day 1 (Friday 26th May): London Luton - Timisoara - Lipova - Soimoş - Timisoara (123km)

 

Fly direct from London Luton to Timisoara. After a short stop at Benececu de Sus, the birthplace of actress Zita Johann (The Mummy,1931), we head north to Lipova for a lunch break and to see the 15th century frescoes at the Church of the Annunciation (if accessible). Our final stop is to visit the nearby ruins of Şoimoş Castle, before returning to Timisoara. Stay 1 night at the Hotel Timisoara.

 

Day 2 (Saturday 27th May): Timisoara - Lugoj - Roman Sarmizegetusa - Densus - Haţeg (186 km)

 

We enjoy a tour of Timisoara, which will include the birthplace of Johnny Weissmuller in the suburb of Freidorf. After lunch we depart eastwards to Lugoj (70km) to visit the birthplace of Bela Lugosi. We then drive to the Roman ruins at Sarmizegetusa (92km) and the frescoed church of Densus (12km) which incorporates part of the mausoleum of a 4th century Roman army officer. Continue to Haţeg (12km) for a 2-night stay at the Hotel Corviniana.

 

Day 3 (Sunday 28th May): Colţ - Deva - Hunedoara - Haţeg (138 km)

 

Hunedoara Castle

 

We depart for the ruined Colţ Citadel (29km) - inspiration for Jules Verne’s The Castle of the Carpathians (1893). We next visit Deva (71km) to visit the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation, with a break for lunch. In the afternoon we continue to the spectacular Hunedoara (Corvin) Castle (13km) where Vlad Tepeş spent two periods of imprisonment during his life. Return to Haţeg (25km) and our hotel.

 

Day 4 (Monday 29th May): Haţeg - Sarmizegetusa Regia - Câlnic - Sibiel - Sibiu (210 km)

 

Sarmizegetusa Regia

 

Departing Haţeg, we drive to Sarmizegetusa Regia (57km), the mountain capital of the Dacians. Continue to the castle of Câlnic (97km) with a lunch stop en route, before driving to the village of Sibiel (36km), noted for its tradition of witchcraft, to visit the Museum of Icons Painted on Glass. Continue to Sibiu (20km) for a 2-night stay at the Hotel Golden Tulip.

 

Day 5 (Tuesday 30th May): Sibiu

 

We enjoy a morning walking tour of the historic city (formerly Hermannstadt).

Afternoon at leisure to explore the many attractions of the city – its museums, galleries and shops!

 

Day 6 (Wednesday 31st May): Sibiu - Cârţa Abbey - Saxon fortified churches - Sighişoara (211 km)

 

Cârţa Abbey

 

Leaving Sibiu we visit a number of Saxon fortified churches, but our first stop is the ruined 13th century monastery of Cârţa (48km), inspiration for the film The Nun (2018), and reputedly one of Romania’s most haunted places.

From there we continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Viscri (78km) where we will have lunch (included) and a chance to explore the church.

In the afternoon we visit the churches at Cața (Katzendorf, 23km) and Archita (Arkeden, 35km).

Driving northwards along the Olt Valley we arrive at Sighişoara (27km) and our two night stay at the Hotel Central Park.

 

Day 7 (Thursday 1st June): Sighişoara

 

 

Day at leisure to explore the beautiful medieval town of Sighişoara, with dinner (included) at the Casa Vlad Dracula restaurant in the house that was the birthplace of Vlad Tepeş.

 

Day 8 (Friday 2nd June): Sighişoara – Coltesti - Bistriţa (322km)

 

Departing Sighişoara, we head north-west to the Trascău Mountains where we will visit the ruins of Coltesti Fortress (148km). After a lunch break we continue to the world famous salt mine at Turda (35km). We then journey northwards to Bistriţa (139km) for a two night stay at the Hotel Coroana De Aur (the ‘Golden Crown’ hotel).

 

 

Day 9 (Saturday 3rd June): Bistriţa -Tihuţa (Borgo) Pass - Bistriţa

 

We follow in Jonathan Harker’s footsteps with a drive up to the Tihuta (Borgo) pass. Return to the Golden Crown for our final dinner (included) and accommodation at the hotel.

 

Day 10 (Sunday 4th June): Bistriţa – Cluj – Cluj airport (108km)

 

Leaving the Golden Crown hotel, we drive south-eastwards to Cluj (108km), for a walking tour of the city. Free time for lunch and to explore the city before heading to Cluj airport for our return flight.
